French Ecosoc hearing CESE

FRENCH ECOSOC HEARING CESE OF 20/10.2021 ON ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH POLICY

Women and climate issues

In 2030 the planet will have 8 billion people
Poverty, age, differences in medical care between women and men, significant exposure to pollution and environmental risks are recognized factors of women’s vulnerability to climate change.

Climate change is a problem of economic justice since the wealthiest will be able to adapt but the poor will not be able to and will be increasingly constrained to migration, a phenomenon already identified as a growing presence of women in migratory flows.

International issues

According to the latest IPCC report of 2021, ocean warming and snowmelt have indeed started. Many of these changes have been unprecedented for thousands of years, and some of the current events, such as sea level rise, are irreversible over thousands of years. Several French cities have been identified that should be under water before the end of our century (Bordeaux, Nice…)
Biodiversity is experiencing its sixth extinction and we are suffering and will suffer from infectious diseases transmitted from animals to humans following the destruction of their eco-systems. The COVID-19 pandemic has been affecting all countries of our planet for two long years now.
Global conventions and strategies are trying to alarm and give tools to stem the coming disasters of climate change and its consequences on the most fundamental health and human rights. For Women Health Climate, the battle of climate will only be won with women. Not just because they represent half of humanity or are on the front line of the effects of climate change. But also because they are committed and act daily to preserve the environment. Respect for gender equality and the place of women in decision-making positions will depend on effective environmental protection and sustainable development for all countries, including France.
